This was an epic project which turned into a collaboration with my parents, to produce a Final Fantasy-styled chest for my brother's birthday present. It was inspired by him geeking out over his friend being bought one of the official FFVII merchandise potions. I couldn't afford that, so I did this.

You have no idea how hard it is to get hold of decently potion-esque bottles until you try. My first attempt ended up with my holding five antique bottles all marked "poison"! Since I was trying to arrange matters so my brother could drink the contents of the bottles if the notion took him, I had to send those back and try again. God bless Ebay.

Anyway. My mother took the smaller of two white chests, stripped off the strapping, and sanded off all the white to restain the wood and spray the strapping gold. My father made the wood shavings to be used as packaging. I bought all the other materials, sewed the Phoenix Down purse (from first principles: I am NOT a seamstress!), tied the feathers, stained card to use as labels and wrote out the labels, wrapped silver wire around the bottles as best I could (you people who do wire-wrapped jewellery are saints), and mixed the food colouring with water for the final result.

My sister and I once did something like that for my brother, but ours was a Zelda chest. It came with a note that said "on the equipment subscreen, please select the sword and place it on you to equip it." or something like that. We put in it a mini master sword necklace that we made inside it, along with some shiny rocks that looked like rupees. But that was AGES ago....

Love to my husband and beautiful daughter!

I did once slip my brother a gift of money with a note that congratulated him on "finding 2000 zenny". I figured the potions and phoenix down were enough for this chest!

Ohhh this would be the coolest idea for something like a bath and body sort of gift. Instead of using food color and water, fill the bottles with different colored soaps, and the phoenix down bag could be filled with some sort of body glitter, with the feather as the duster.

Awesome idea, and it turned out great!

And I'll love her like I loved my first, I'll laugh until me stomach hurts, and I'll dream until I turn to clay, and I'll be okay.

That would be a nice idea ... and the image of my brother with body glitter on has made my eyes bleed. Thanks. ;P
